What is marbling ( EBRU)
Marbling is a traditional Turkish art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and than transforming this pattern to all kind of objects.Leather marbling is a mono-printimg technique where colors are deposited onto gelatinous size.By using stylus,rakes and combs the pattern is made on the surface of the size.Leather, all kind of clothes treated with alum is than carefully laid onto the surface of the size.A few seconds later,the leather or clothe is removed the size and the patterns is transfered onto the leather or clothes.The surface of the size is than skimmed with a strip of material to remove the remaining colors.The process is repeated for the next pattern.Each pattern made is therefore unique.

Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper.The special tools of the trade are brushes of horsehair bound to straight rose twigs,a deep try made of unknotted pinewood,naturel earth pigments,cattle gall and tragacant.It is belived to be invented in the thirteenth century Turkistan .This decorative art then spread to China,India and Persia and Anatolia.Seljuk and Ottoman caliigraphers and than artists used marbling to decorate books,imperial decrees,offical correspondence and documents.New forms and techniques were perfected in the process and Tureky remind the center of marbling for many centuries.Up until the 1920’s.marblers ahd workshops in the Beyazit district of Istanbul creating for both the local and Europea market.where it is known AS TURKISH MARBLE PAPER.
